True Love Is Not Something That Happens To You…

Years ago, I attended a wedding where the minister gave sound advice to the blissfully ignorant couple: “Promise me you will have at least one argument a day.”

The bride and groom were puzzled, and they weren’t the only ones. I thought to myself, where in the world is the old man going with this? The minister paused as if he wanted the story to take root in the young couple’s hearts. I don’t know if they even remember it; they were probably anxious to get on with their honeymoon.

After a few awkward moments, the minister grinned and said, “Let me explain. Young man, you should always be looking out for the interests, happiness, and well-being of your new bride.” Then he turned to the new wife and said, “And you, young lady, should also be striving to place the needs, wants, and joy of your husband above your own wishes and desires.”

“If you are choosing a restaurant, make sure you insist on a restaurant your partner truly enjoys. If you are deciding on a movie, again make sure you are arguing to see the movie your partner wants to see.”

His message was clear: TRUE LOVE IS WANTING THE HAPPINESS OF ANOTHER WITH NO ULTERIOR MOTIVE. There is no angle or agenda. You behave in a way that places that person’s needs, wants, and wishes above your own. It defines how you treat others.
