Let’s Agree to Disagree Respectfully!

Increasing incivility disturbs me.

I’m not advocating you all think like me, that would suck.

This world is full of broad and diverse opinions. Those differences make us better. What troubles me is the anger, and hate I see from some with opposing views.

Lively debate is critical to creating optimal outcomes. In America, civil debate is a constitutional right. The fact is, you protect your beliefs by protecting others, especially when their opinions are contrary to yours.

You not only have the right, but you have a duty to civilly persuade others that you believe they are off the reservation. That they are societally disgusting or perhaps morally evil, but you have a responsibility to disagree respectfully. That is democracy at its core.

The people with whom you differ are human and worthy of decency. Harassing, screaming, mocking, shaming, threatening, or intimidating with vile anger is savagery, not civility. That will work against you, not for you.

You have an inalienable right to believe whatever you want, but your right to believe whatever doesn’t imply that whatever you believe is right. That is horse dung.

Let’s try more polite passion via talking, debating and voting. And then, let’s agree to respectfully disagree sometimes.
