My Top 2 Divorced Dad Pet Peeves!

1 – Don’t go MIA. Choose your kids over career if given the option. If you have no choice (there are many reasons), use technology to stay present. Do not stop fatherhood because It doesn’t fit in “your” plan.

When you have the kids, don’t check out physically or emotionally. Going out with the guys or on a date while your kids sit at home is cowardice.

2 – Make your home a place where they WANT to be, not where they HAVE to be. I’ve been divorced twice (yep) and have two children with each ex. My ex’s and I made up a schedule (not the state). Yet, the kids over the ages of 5ish could always veto the schedule. Tell them that you want them as much as possible. But that if they do not want to be at your home, you do not want them there.

This is easier said than done. Occasionally my kids would say, Dad, I’m going to hang at Mom’s because a friend is coming over to play, do homework, etc. Could they do those activities at my home? Yes, but sometimes it is not practical. Give your kids the freedom to exercise their right to be where they want to be. Ditch your ego and put your kid’s interest first.

The more you push the more they pull away. Divorced Dad’s that force their kids to come to their house when the kids do not want to will eventually lose them altogether. A 15-year old that doesn’t want to go to Dad’s won’t, and no legality will change that.
