We All Judge Others.

There’s one universal question we all ask the moment we meet someone for the first time. Consciously or subconsciously we ask it and draw fast, fixed conclusions. This question and our answer are particularly important if it is a potential/new teacher, leader, partner, friend, etc.

Do you know what that question is? Drum roll please….

CAN I TRUST YOU?

YES = safety, friendly, kind, and accepting.

NO = danger, aloof, uncaring, and ostracizing.

Do you have any idea how fast each party asks and answers this question?

A. Within 3 minutes, B. 60 seconds, C. 30 seconds, D. 3 seconds

New drum roll…

Answer: E. None of the above. Evidence shows that we ask and answer within a blink of an eye. Yep, a blink of an eye (50 milliseconds). Think of your last interview, blind date, sales call, or office party. How did you do?

Based on our evolutionary DNA, a lighting fast and true skill to judge trustworthiness in others has evolved to ensure survival.

While your mother has taught you not to judge others, your Neanderthal grandpappy passed down lighting fast judgment skills embedded in your genes vital to survival.

First impressions can at times be unreliable, but once there, they are hard to replace.

How can you exhibit trustworthiness in 50 milliseconds?

Part II of III next week!
